On 26 December cycling enthusiasts and families are invited to the historic Faure Stadium in Paarl for the 126th edition of the iconic Paarl Boxing Day Track Cycling event. Running from 12:00 to 18:00, this much-anticipated event promises adrenaline-packed races, a vibrant atmosphere and memorable moments for all attending it.
This year’s programme is packed with excitement, featuring South Africa’s best track cyclists and catering for everyone, from newcomers riding road bikes to seasoned masters. The highlight of the day will be the prestigious invitation races, which showcase only the top-performing riders from earlier events:. The Keirin: A high-speed tactical sprint race.. The One Mile: A thrilling test of endurance and speed.. The 25 Mile: The grand finale and the day’s most anticipated event.
126 years of tradition
First held in 1897, the Paarl Boxing Day event holds the title of the world’s longest-standing track-cycling competition. Once a combined athletics and cycling event it has since evolved into a pure cycling spectacle, attracting top local and international talent. This legacy has deeply influenced the cycling culture in Paarl, shaping countless athletes over the years.
Among the top athletes competing is Nolan Hoffman, a local legend, and the rider with the most 25-mile wins in the event’s history. He is poised to chase his eighth victory, adding to the day’s drama and excitement.
The event promises an unforgettable atmosphere, with crowds passionately cheering for their favourites. Those attending can enjoy delicious food from vendors, including halaal options, and experience a programme designed for all age levels, from youth to masters..
