Paarl police would like to warn the community to beware of banking call centre fraud lately trending on crimes being reported.

Police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis explained the victim typically gets a phone call from a person claiming to be from the fraud department of their bank.

“The person asks for certain information from the victim to stop a ‘fraudulent transaction’ that has been picked up on the victim’s bank account.

“Once the victim provides this person with the details, actual fraudulent transactions then occur on the victim’s bank account.”

Du Plessis urges people to be very careful and verify the call agent.

“If you receive any call from any bank, make sure to never provide any information that can give them direct access to your accounts.

“It is important to tell the agent that you will visit the nearest branch. Do not allow a call agent to simply verify details over the phone.”
