Drakenstein councillor Sindile Gravel has, for the second consecutive year, hosted a back-to-school initiative in Mbekweni aimed at helping pupils start the academic year with confidence and dignity.

The initiative, held this past Monday at Chippa’s Place, a well known establishment in the area, provided free haircuts and hairstyles to school going children ahead of the reopening of schools.

This year’s programme saw the hair of 150 boys cut free of charge, while 25 girls received complimentary hairstyles.

Gravel launched the initiative last year and, following overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents and the broader community, it has now been formalised as an annual event.

“There is a real need for projects like this in our communities,” Gravel said.

“Something as simple as a haircut can make a huge difference to a child’s confidence.

“It restores dignity in our kids as they prepare for the new school year.”

Parents welcomed the initiative, saying it eased financial pressure at a time when households face multiple back to school expenses, including uniforms, stationery and transport costs.

Gravel said the programme is not only about appearance, but also about creating a sense of pride and readiness among learners.

“When children feel good about themselves, they walk into the classroom more confident and ready to learn,” he added.

The councillor thanked local partners and service providers for their support, noting that community collaboration is key to sustaining such initiatives in future years.

With the back to school drive now an annual fixture, Gravel said plans are already underway to expand the programme and reach even more learners in Mbekweni in the years ahead.
