Paarl Mountain has recently been in the headlines again.
A few weeks ago Paarl Post broke the very good news that the mountain will be the centre of the world-renowned gruelling MTB race The Cape Epic for four whole days, the majority of next year’s race.
This, however, was tarnished this past weekend when another attack on a cyclist took place on the mountain road.
For many years Paarl Mountain has been very popular among nature lovers. Every weekend the mountain is teeming with visitors enjoying its natural beauty while pursuing their hobbies such as cycling, hiking and running.
Paarl Mountain is known for its wealth of magnificent fynbos and its serene beauty and birdlife, not to mention the well-known massive granite outcrops.
But more often attacks have also been taking place.
Eco and adventure tourism is the worlds’ fastest growing sector in tourism, and the Cape Epic will set the stage for an influx of nature and sports lovers to Paarl.
One can only hope that the Drakenstein Municipality will grab this opportunity and create a safer and more structured environment on Paarl Mountain to make it a number-1 destination in the Cape Winelands.
