The artwork of Dieuwke-Jean Linee, entitled Reclamation (2022), will be exhibited on 1 December at The Castle Of Good Hope in Cape Town.

Reclamation (2022) is a 16-piece exhibition of pencil drawings, acrylic paintings and oil pastel drawings dedicated to female figures of South African history, known and unknown, from its early colonial beginnings in 1652 to present-day movers and shakers.

Biographical in nature, and focusing on many stories lost between the pages of the country’s history books, the portraits are realistic depictions of history seen through the eyes of a young South African female artist.

Based on physical descriptions published in journals, books and letters, Linee captures and re-imagines the essence of each character and brings them into a brand new spotlight. Symbolic and metaphorical, and sometimes ironic and raw in nature, her artistic style is reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch portraits and Baroque paintings, using bold and bright colours to add a playful touch to her work. Linee pays a stunning visual tribute to her mixed heritage by blending the techniques of her French and Khoisan ancestry.
