Recently Paarl Post received a complaint from a resident alleging that Drakenstein Municipality appointed someone without advertising the post in the local media.
The appointment was made at the end of last year.
The complainant is of the opinion that the post was never advertised, which means that the larger community did not get a fair chance to apply for the job.
According to the complainant he had contacted the Human Resources Department of the municipality to find out why this specific job had not been advertised.
He told Paarl Post he had been informed that it was a temporary job, and the candidates were sourced after which three were interviewed.
Paarl Post enquired into the matter and approached Drakenstein Municipality regarding the resident’s complaint.
It asked what the legal requirements are for the municipality to follow when it wishes to fill a position and, if legal, when can people be sourced for positions and when should a job be advertised.
Seraj Johaar, Executive Director: Corporate Services at the Municipality, responded that the appointment was “subject to a competitive process.
“No specific person was sourced and three candidates were interviewed.”
An enquiry was again sent to the municipality asking that it explain the requirements it has to follow to fill a position.
It responded that it stood by its initial response on the matter.
