The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) urges parents to enrol their children for the 2021 school year as soon as applications open on the department’s website on Monday 17 February.

This applies to first time school-goers, grade 8 learners and those who want to transfer to a new school in the province.

According to the department parents should apply to at least three schools of their choice, indicating their order of preference on the system. The application requires a certified copy of the learner’s identity document or birth certificate. A study permit issued by the Department of Home Affairs for foreign learners must also be attached.

Primary school learners are asked to include their immunisation card, while learners who want to transfer to another school should attach a transfer letter and their last school report from their previous school.

All applications must be done and submitted online, except for when parents do not have access to computer facilities says WCED spokesperson Millicent Merton.

“Applications can be done online, however, if a school cannot provide the facilities for you to do so, or you do not have such facilities at home or at work, then you can request a paper-based application,” says Merton.

It is best to apply as soon as applications open to secure placement. Admissions close on Tuesday 17 March. Parents will be informed of the outcome of their application per email and SMS between 15 and 22 May. They need to confirm acceptance by Friday 5 June. The WCED emphasises that parents should accept and confirm placement within three days of receiving an offered place.

The official responsible for admissions in the Cape Winelands district is John Goliath. He can be reached on 023 348 6000 or 023 348 4681 or sent an email to John.Goliath@westerncape.gov.za.
