For about 20 years the Athlone House of Strength (Ahos) in Paarl East has been a safe haven for victims of gender-based violence, especially women and children.
Its aim is to restore and empower the women and children in its care.
On average the shelter assists about 150 victims per year. According to criteria set by the Department of Social Development (DSD) the shelter is registered as a service provider for victims of gender-based violence.
“Unfortunately, we do not accommodate the destitute,” acting manager of Ahos Caureen Pietersen pointed out. “If such circumstances arise we immediately refer them to the necessary assistance they need.”
She said clients who are entered in the Victim Empowerment Programme stay in the shelter for a period of three months, or sometimes longer, based on the identified circumstances.
The shelter has its own registered social worker and social auxiliary worker on the premises.
According to Pietersen it does require psychological services assistance. Because Ahos is a non-profit organisation this service is not included.
“Some of the cases are so traumatic the clients require psychological services to help with their healing,” she pointed out. “The organisation would like to appeal to professionals in this field to volunteer their services.”
Pietersen explains gender-based violence clients are referred to Ahos by external social workers.
But if the shelter has walk-ins they are screened according to their criteria, and if they do not meet the criteria they are referred to an appropriate place so they can receive the necessary assistance.
Ahos also partners with various stakeholders, such as Valcare and Wamakersvallei, which offer skills development courses to women at the shelter.
Donations of gently used clothing, toys, non-perishable food and furniture (fridge, washing machines and beds) are welcome.
Those who would like to sign up as volunteers are welcome, but they must be 25 years and older, and should provide an updated police clearance to be able to run activities with the women and their children.
Individuals who wish to volunteer at Ahos can contact the safe house on 021 862 9983 or send email to ahosreception@em-it.co.za.
