As we enter the last two weeks of 2024 let us look at what we, as South Africans, endured this year.
The year 2024 has been one of significant contrasts for South Africa, marked by both triumphs and challenges.
On the positive side, the country showed notable improvements in its efforts to combat corruption. Several high-profile figures were arrested, signalling a stronger commitment from the government to hold those in power accountable.
Furthermore, there were small, yet hopeful, economic gains. Inflation showed a slight decrease, and there were modest improvements in job creation, offering some relief in a nation grappling with high unemployment rates.
However, the year has not been without its serious challenges. Although load shedding lessened this year, South Africa’s struggling electricity grid remains a major issue, undermining any economic progress and creating a sense of uncertainty about the future. Additionally, South Africa’s persistent inequality rate remains a harsh reality. The divide between rich and poor continues to widen, and poverty levels have deepened with millions still facing dire living conditions.
Gender-based violence also remains a problem, with few mitigation measures to combat this epidemic. The safety-and-security situation is concerning too.
Crime rates have continued to be a significant problem, with many South Africans feeling unsafe in their communities. While the government has made efforts to improve law enforcement, progress has been slow, and many citizens still struggle with the effects of violence and insecurity.
However, in spite of these setbacks South Africa’s resilience shines through. The determination of its people to overcome these obstacles and create a better future is a source of hope.
Enjoy the festive season with your family and be safe.
